Make your own glühwein | mulled wine recipe

Saucepan of simmering mulled wine

I don’t know what it is, but there is absolutely nothing more warming and cosy than mulled wine this time of year. I do love my tea and coffee, but glühwein (literally ‘glow-wine’ in German) is just the thing I crave after a long day out at this time of year.

This recipe only takes an hour to make and yields about 6-8 cups depending on the size of the mug. It will last 3-5 days in the fridge, but I can almost guarantee it won’t be around long enough for you to test that. Enjoy!

Juice of 2 oranges
2 oranges, sliced
10 whole cloves
5 cinnamon sticks
2/3 star anise pods
1 bay leaf
1 vanilla bean halved (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
½ cup sugar (light brown or coconut are best)

2 bottles vegan red wine
1 cup rum (or brandy)

*Feel free to experiment with the quantities based on your tastes, this is just the way I like mine!

Put all ingredients excluding the wine and rum into your large saucepan/pot and bring to the boil (stick the cloves into the orange slices so they’re easier to remove later)

Bring to a boil before reducing the heat and simmering for about half an hour

Add one cup of wine to the pan and let simmer for another half an hour or so

Stir in the remaining wine and rum and gently heat, making sure it doesn’t boil – this will maintain the alcohol content!

After a few minutes once the wine is hot, strain it into a decorative bowl or jug and serve

Optional: throw in some cinnamon sticks, orange slices and star anise for decoration!
